Airstream Travel Trailer Concept by Studio F. A. Porsche
Airstream and Studio F. A. Porsche recently partnered to design a lightweight, garageable travel trailer concept that addresses the changing world of RV adventure, including a broader, more diverse base of potential customers and the need for increased environmental sustainability.
The result is the Airstream Concept Travel Trailer designed by Studio F. A. Porsche, a design that rethinks aerodynamics and efficiency while reimagining the RV travel experience. The concept blends Airstream鈥檚 iconic aluminum look with a clean-sheet design from Studio F. A. Porsche to create an Airstream unlike any previous model.
The concept design integrates numerous advances in aerodynamics, including a new rear shape that sheds air while in motion, a flush underside without drag-creating projections, the first-ever active lowering suspension in a travel trailer, and the first insulated pop-up roof in Airstream鈥檚 history. This completely new Airstream shell shape was refined through advanced aerodynamic simulation.
The concept trailer鈥檚 essential systems are incorporated inside the chassis and interior, resulting in a sleek aerodynamic exterior free from protrusions that create aerodynamic drag. The ducted air conditioning is located above the floor, instead of on the roof. Several systems are tucked inside the 10-inchdeep space below the floor, including the hot water and heating components, a fuel tank, spare wheel, holding tanks and the lithium battery.
Materials are critical to the Airstream Studio F. A. Porsche Concept鈥檚 innovative design. The concept features a stiffer chassis and floor system, and carbon fiber is used in the pop-up roof and other components to reduce weight. This lighter weight makes the concept trailer the perfect RV for both smaller internal combustion engine tow vehicles and EVs
A low profile 鈥 coupled with a suspension that allows the chassis to lower even further to the ground 鈥 makes the concept the first 鈥済arageable鈥 Airstream design in the company鈥檚 90-year history. The overhead clearance is reduced by incorporating a pop-up roof system that can be raised while camping and lowers flush with the roof to preserve a low profile while in tow.
An air suspension in the chassis allows the body of the concept trailer to adjust its ride height to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The chassis can also be raised to enhance off-road maneuverability and lowered to enable storage in most garages. The ability to store the trailer in a home garage makes ownership much easier for a broader range of customers.
The concept鈥檚 innovative design extends to its interior, where the team collaborated to maximize the use of space and dramatically enhance the owner experience. The innovative pop-up roof elevates to create 12 inches of overhead space, while the extensive use of windows and skylights creates a spacious interior feel.
Building on the current popularity of the rear hatch option in other Airstream Travel Trailer models, the concept trailer鈥檚 redesigned rear hatch features a new two-piece design, with a hinge-up hatch and a drop-down tailgate to which awnings can be attached. This conceptual design extends the interior living space, connecting travelers with their surroundings and allowing for easy loading of adventure gear.
The Airstream Studio F. A. Porsche Concept features a floorplan unlike any other Airstream with an innovative rear seating area that transforms from dining to working to relaxing space. The versatile seating area also quickly converts from dinette seating to a large 82鈥 x 61鈥 sleeping area. Reclining seat options allow owners to enjoy the views through the open hatch.
The wet bath, incorporated into the front roadside corner, features a door that creates an enclosed, private area and swings freely to hide the toilet when it鈥檚 not in use. This clever design opens up more space in the adjacent galley, which is extended even further on the curbside by a hinge-up counter that extends in front of the main entry door. These ingenious design elements create a sizable L-shaped workspace that rivals what鈥檚 found in many larger travel trailers.
